Playing Eldar: The First Outing

In the Rocket City, we have a pretty good group of 40k gamers. A lot of us play in our little clusters most of the time (such as the handful that join me at my apartment). The local club, HAAWGS, has been setting up game nights for the last few months in an attempt to get everyone out and mingle a little more. Tonight is one such night, and my Eldar are going to take their first trip away from home.

This isn't my very first time playing with the Eldar, though I only have a few games in at this point just to get a feel for the basic units.  With a mix of poor dice rolls on critical events and a general lack of understanding of the army I have yet to win a game, though I did manage a draw in my most recent game.   I have agreed to help one of the members of HAAWGS by playing a game of 40k against his son's Ork army.  From my understanding, Lucas is about 13 years old and only has a handful of games under his belt.  I am going to use a very unfamiliar army myself, so this should put us on a more equal footing, even though I have a great understanding of the 40k fundamentals.

With that in mind, the plan is to learn how my units work, have fun, and give this kid an overall great experience.  I'm very much the competitive type, but not every game needs to be played in a cutthroat manner.  I'm hoping Lucas will surprise me with his knowledge of the game so I can spend more of my resources on performing better on the tabletop.  To make things easy to remember, I will only be using the models I own.  Sometimes at these events we play with a couple of proxies, but generally everything is WYSIWYG.  My Fire Dragons are supposed to arrive tomorrow, so my list will definitely be without them tonight.  Storm guardians are also out, as I think I only have four of them built at this point.

I have tailored the firepower in the list to be able to accommodate a horde type army, but I have made an effort not to specifically pick on the Orks.  Most of the time when I come to these events I do not have an opponent planned ahead of time and so I bring an all-comers list.  I did advise Lucas and his father ahead of time, so I'm hoping he does some tweaks to plan for Eldar as well. It should be interesting.  Without further explanation, here is the planned list:

Total: 1991 Points

The basic plan is to reserve the jetbikes to keep them safe for a few turns, and then use them to help clean up the remnants of other squads.  If need be, they can work on armor as well with the Warlocks' spears. The squads are increased to 5-men squads to require that 2 models are killed to make a leadership test.  While that doesn't take a lot of firepower, I expect to keep the enemy's fire focused on closer and more immediate threats.

I will use the Vypers top lay down suppressive fire, taking out the Ork vehicles and providing cover to my Wave Serpents.  The Harlequins will be babysitting the Wraithlords a little bit, with the Shadowseer acting as their leash, at least until the guardians come on and provide some more psychic coverage.  I know that these Wraithlords will severely slow down my force unless I leave them unsupported.  I don't have a huge problem with leaving them to their own devices if they survive past mid-game.  Their sole job is to take out the enemy transports so that the rest of my army can move around at their leisure.

As always, feedback is appreciated, even after my gaming tonight is completed.  More insight is never a bad thing.

  1. I don't like mixing ranges on Vypers. Not such an issue on Serpents, they are immune to Melta, but Vypers need to hang back, IMO.

I hate Wraithlords in a list, lol.

  2. This is interesting - I haven't seen a list like this in awhile!

Okay, obviously it's not optimized, but I actually think the shifting meta (and yea, I know that's not a popular opinion, whether it exists or not... it does!) will allow this to slip through the cracks some and do okay.

What is your strategy with the Guardian Jetbikes? In general, it looks like you can do a bit of mech-hunting with the Warlock; that might help out with the problems you'll face without Dragons.

I like that loadout for Wraithlords. I think they're okay again, though it's hard to argue Fireprisms are the optimal choice.

I agree with the King on the Vipers, and personally I'd choose 36-inches. You can save yourself some points on the chin-cannon. If you want the Vypers for blocking, double Shuriken Cannons aren't terri-bad.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your army, as well as your blog. It looks great!

I've suffered with mine, since I don't know the coding and haven't had time to learn. I can use Dreamweaver, but for some reason that doesn't translate for me.

For what it's worth, I've got you linked up with Strictly Average; hopefully the crowd that circulates through the Brent-King-Chumby-Kirby (and numerous others, I'm sure) will stop by.

    So don't suck!

    Words to live by.

Also, turning on the Follower's tab in your Gadgets makes it much easier for people to subscribe to your blog...

Do post about how the game went. I have my suppositions on what will have done well or not but always like to see practical application.

@TKE: Why not use the blogspot navigation bar at the top with that handy "Follow" button?

  5. As requested, I have added the Followers gadget. it should make things interesting. Now I shall provide some information on how the game went. Expect a new topic for that in several minutes. It'll be easier to read there than in the comments, I think.

  6. Ray - what type of army are you wanting to have? A tough as nails tournament competitive army, a fluffy army that just has units you like, or a themed army (i.e. Biel-Tann, Saim-Hann, Ulthewe)?

Also - what is your playing style? Speed/Mobility, HTH in your face, gunline, etc...

  7. BTW - see that you are from Huntsville. I'm part of the Blade and Bolter club in Nashville. Have lot's of good buddies down your way in the 40K hobby - George Flowers, Jason Dunham, etc. Did you go to the Kalm?

  8. @Aldonis: I am open to playing many different styles. I'm a fan of elite forces that don't require me to spend much time moving things. I find it lets me focus more on the strategies and tactics. I'm likely going heavily machanized, however since mech works more easily and the Grav Tanks are what pulled me into the hobby to begin with.

I didn't make it to the Kalm this year. I was at Stones River and made a decent showing there (3-1) though my battle points were horrible since I was totally outmatched by the newer armies since I was running Dark Angels. I earned about 10 points per win and got tabled in my one loss. You guys put up some good fighting in that event.

  9. I'm not a huge fan of Wraithlords really. They're awfully pricey for not much firepower or mobility comparatively.

The lack of Fire Dragons really stands out. Orks don't have much in the way of heavy armor or tough troops, but Meganobs, Nobs and Battlewagons go down a lot quicker if you have meltas zooming around.
